Before life at yogatown, I spent 12 years working in a cubicle. 8 hours a day deprived from sunshine and fresh air definitely wore me down somedays. But then one day something dawned on me; why don’t I take the good vibes of my yoga to work? The results were a happier, calmer, and kinder me.
Here are 4 easy tips to take your yoga to work:
- Create a clutter-free environment.
I’ve always taken the approach that your surroundings are a reflection of your mind. Look for ways to declutter your space. Recycle the stacks of paper that you no longer need, take down the Christmas cards (it’s March you guys), and put all those contacts into your phone instead of your post-it notes around the office.
- Focus on your alignment
How are you sitting at the desk today? Are you slouched over, chin forward, staring at your screen? Think of yourself in mountain pose (tadasana). Imagine a line of energy moving from the base of your spine all the way to the crown of your head. Shoulders back, lower ribs contained, crown of your head in line with your pelvis – you’ll be feeling energized before you know it! Don’t forget to get up and take a walk or stretch break each hour – maybe even to grab some water.
Feeling worked up about something? Did Becky send 25 copies of a report to the printer and you need to get a memo to the boss 5 minutes ago? Don’t get mad, get zen. Check in with your breath and s l o w i t d o w n. 10 deep inhales and 10 long exhales and you’ll be back on track.
- Cultivate Peace at Work
Start your day with an intention. It could be as simple as the word “Peace” or a phrase like “I am kindness.” Whenever you find that you’re being pulled away from your intention, pause and repeat it with your breath.
